SINGAPORE, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- Singapore leaders on Thursday sent their condolences on the passing of former Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid.
Singapore's President S R Nathan, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew, and Foreign Minister George Yeo have written to Abdurrahman Wahid's widow Shinta Nuriyah Wahid to convey their condolences.
Nathan wrote in his letter that Wahid's leadership during the early years of Indonesia's democratization upheld inter-faith harmony and helped lay the foundations for Indonesia to become the moderate Islamic democracy it is today.
Lee Hsien Loong said in his condolence letter that Wahid will be remembered as "an upholder of moderate of Islam and a defender of the minorities."
Abdurrahman Wahid passed away on Dec. 30, 2009.
