Bangladesh to tighten security on New Year's eve in capital

    DHAKA, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) -- Over 12,000 Bangladeshi police and anti-crime elite force Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) will be deployed in capital Dhaka on Dec. 31 night to maintain law and order, according to local media Wednesday.

    The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) authorities will deploy around 10,000 police personnel, including its men of plain cloth wing Detective Branch (DB) and Traffic Division, from 06:00 p.m. on Dec. 31 in Dhaka, AKM Shahidul Haque, Commissioner of DMP, was quoted as saying by the national news agency BSS.

    He said excepting regular deployment of 7,000 police personnel, additional 3,000 police and 2,000 RAB members will also be deployed at different strategic points to avert any untoward incident.

    No incidents of indiscipline, including reckless driving and dancing on Dhaka's streets, would be tolerated on Dec. 31 night, the DMP Commissioner said, adding that if any drunk driver would be found on the street he or she would be arrested along with the vehicle.

    The DMP Commissioner said that they will set up 106 check posts in all strategic points in Dhaka to check unruly mob.

    Eight teams of striking force and 29 mobile teams will patrol the sensitive areas round-the-clock. 14 platoon police forces would be kept at the police control room as reserve force.

    Four video cameras will record the movement of the Dec. 31 night revelers from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. on January 1, 2010.

    Commander Mohammad Shoail, Media Director of RAB, said 2,000 additional RAB members would be deployed in Dhaka.

    Dog squads and Bomb Disposal Unit of the RAB will also be deployed in Dhaka during the time.
