MADRID, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- The Spanish government will spend 6.3 million euros (8.8 million U.S. dollars) to cover the expenses of transporting almost 7,000 passengers left stranded due to the closure of Air Comet, authorities said Wednesday.

The expenses would include chartering four planes to take those passengers to their destinations, Transport Minister Concepcion Gutierrez told a press conference.

The Ministry of Development suspended Air Comet operating license on Tuesday after the company stopped its activities and canceled its scheduled flights between Madrid and Latin America, Gutierrez said.

The rented planes will transport some 1,500 passengers in each one of the destinations, including round trips, to cover a total of more than 6,000 affected passengers.

According to Gutierrez, the first flight was to depart at 20:00local time (1900 GMT) on Wednesday from Madrid's Barajas Airport to Buenos Aires, Argentina. The second was to take off at 24:00 (2300 GMT) to Lima, Peru.
