PARIS, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- France has three options about the United States' additional troops demand on Afghanistan, which includes sending "medium-sized supplementary troops," Defense Minister Herve Morin said here on Wednesday.
France and Germany will decide to participate or not in the international military surge in Afghanistan, as the "different options are on the table and will be determined by the conclusion of the London conference," Morin said at a meeting in the National Assembly.
He laid out three choices available for France -- reinforcing French aid on Afghan development, sending more training teams for the Afghan security force or dispatching medium-sized supplementary troops.
The international conference on Jan. 28 in the British capital London, initiated by France, will convene NATO allies, the United Nations, representatives of Afghanistan and its neighbors, and some key international bodies.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy has said France will not be raising its current troop levels at 3,750, but more training teams for the Afghan security force were possible.
Early this month, Obama announced his decision to deploy 30,000additional U.S. troops for Afghanistan in the next year, and urged NATO allies to follow suit. Later, NATO spokesman James Appathurai declared the allies will increase their own contribution by at least 5,000 extra soldiers.
There are currently 38,000 non-U.S. troops in the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan.
