Brazil's industrial production up 2.2% in October

    RIO DE JANEIRO, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- Brazil's industrial production grew for the 10th consecutive month in October, up 2.2 percent from September, according to a study released Wednesday by the national statistics body IBGE.

    However, the monthly-released study showed that the industrial production in October registered a year-on-year decrease of 3.2 percent.

    In the first 10 months of 2009, Brazil's industrial production was down 10.7 percent from the same period in 2008, due to the impact of the international financial crisis on the Brazilian economy.

    In the period from November 2008 to October 2009, the industrial production was down 10.6 percent from the previous 12-month period as a result of the crisis.

    According to the IBGE, in October, industrial production in 21 out of 27 sectors registered growth. The most significant growths were registered in the automotive sector by 11.2 percent, food products by 3 percent, beverages by 4 percent, basic metallurgy by 2.6 percent, pharmaceuticals by 3.1 percent, durable goods by 5.9 percent, non-durable goods by 1.3 percent and intermediate goods by 1.2 percent.

    The largest falls were registered in the chemicals sector by 1.9 percent, hospital equipment by 7.2 percent, and office supplies and computer equipment by 3.8 percent.
