SEOUL, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- The South Korean government said on Monday that it seeks to pull up its export and trade volume to grow into the world's 8th largest trader by 2014.

The Ministry of Knowledge Economy, on its midterm policy plan, said it plans to achieve an export growth of 12.5 percent year-on-year over the next six years, bringing the amount of the outbound shipments to 650 billion U.S. dollars.

The ministry also plans to boost the nation's international trade up to 1.3 trillion U.S. dollars, it added.

To meet its target, the ministry will enhance the country's trade infrastructure, such as export-support financing, marketing and logistics, so that small- and mid-sized firms can increase the portion of exports in their total sales from 30 percent to 40 percent.

Part of its plan seeks for expanding the number of firms with exports over 2 million U.S. dollars to over 10,000 by 2014, the ministry said, adding that it will enable South Korea's global market share reaching near 3 percent.

In 2009, meanwhile, South Korea is likely to stand at the ninth place in the global market, taking up a 3 percent market share, according to the ministry.

The trade surplus is also expected to exceed 40 billion U.S. dollars, breaking the record of 39 billion U.S. dollars tallied in1998, the ministry said.
