Army refutes former chief's charges

    COLOMBO, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's Army Chief Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya here Saturday refuted allegations made by his predecessor General Sarath Fonseka of ill treatment.

    Jayasuriya addressing a gathering at the Army Headquarters said that there was no midnight raid of Fonseka's residence by the military police.

    "We waited for a few days for General Fonseka to see if he would return the excess vehicles under his care", Jayasuriya said adding that the military police was not sent at midnight to Fonseka's residence to ask for vehicles as alleged by him.

    "As an officer with a 40 year service General Fonseka needs to be aware of military procedure", Jayasuriya stressed.

    Fonseka the victorious Army chief in its less than 3 year campaign against the Tamil Tigers claimed victimization since he declared his intention to enter politics.

    Fonseka backed by the two main opposition parties is now poised to run against the incumbent Mahinda Rajapakse in the snap presidential election to be held on Jan. 26 2010.¡¡
