LOS ANGELES, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- Nearly 90 percent of a wind-whipped brush fire in Anaheim Hills, California, has been contained or surrounded by fire crews by Wednesday evening, as firefighters were still keeping a wary eye on a possible recurrence of the flame.

In spite of the gusty winds, fire commanders were confident they could gain an upper hand over the blaze. Full containment of the fire is expected on Thursday, said the Orange County Fire Authority.

The fire started on Tuesday evening on the east side of State Route 241 in Anaheim Hills, Orange County, 50 km southeast of downtown Los Angeles.

By Wednesday morning, the brush fire, fanned by a steady winds of up to 50 miles (80 km) an hour, had burned a hilly and grassy area of up to 90 acres (36 hectare). But no one was hurt in the fire and no houses in the area were under threat. No evacuation orders were issued by authorities.

About 200 firefighters were engaged in a land and aerial fight against the blaze throughout Wednesday, according to officials from the Orange County Fire Authority.

Joining the firefighting effort were 21 fire engines, 4 tanker trucks, a bulldozer and one water-dropping helicopter sent by neighboring Los Angeles County.

According to local television channel ABC7, the fire authority will be staffing each 24-hour shift through Monday with 11 additional firefighters, two water tankers and an on-call incident management team.

The so-called "241 Fire" has originally forced the authorities to shut down a stretch of the state route 241 in both directions.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire. Local reports said the fire might have been caused by a passing driver inadvertently.
