COLOMBO, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's main opposition has decided to back former Army Chief General Sarath Fonseka as opposition front runner against the incumbent Mahinda Rajapakse in the upcoming presidential election.
The main opposition United National Party (UNP) leader Ranil Wickremesinghe told reporters here Thursday that his party's working committee had endorsed Fonseka's candidature.
Rajapakse on Monday announced his intention to go for a snap presidential election two years ahead of schedule.
The UNP decision followed the main left party JVP's decision made on Monday to back Fonseka in the presidential race.
The election date is yet to be announced.
