MOSCOW, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- Russia's state gas monopoly Gazprom and its Ukrainian counterpart Naftogaz agreed on Tuesday to cut Russian gas supplies to Ukraine by 35 percent in 2010, from 52 billion cubic meters to 33.75 billion cubic meters.
Gazprom and Naftogaz have reached supplements to the gas contract signed by Russian and Ukrainian prime ministers in January, Itar-Tass quoted a Gazprom source as saying after talks between Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller and Naftogaz CEO Oleg Dubina.
The documents set the amount of gas to be delivered in 2010 at 33.75 billion cubic meters, and stipulate that Naftogaz will not be fined for taking less gas than required by the contract in 2009,he said.
Russia supplies a quarter of EU's gas needs, with 80 percent of it pumped through Ukrainian pipelines. The energy supplier cut off gas deliveries to Ukraine for nearly two weeks in January, leaving tens of thousands of Europeans without heating gas in the depths of winter.
