JAKARTA, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian Finance Minister Sri Mulyani said on Tuesday that the government's bailout on PT Bank Century last year was aimed at preventing domino effect on other banks should the bank allowed to close.

The statement come as the issue comes to a head recently and the parliament plans to make an inquiry.

"If we see the situation at that time, in November, when the global financial crisis had started. The closure of the Bank Century could make a rush not only on the bank, but also on others23 banks which had similar problems with Bank Century," she told a press briefing at the Finance Ministry Office here.

Beside, the closure of the Bank Century could also decrease public trust on banking in Indonesia, as the country had just experienced such situation during the Asian financial crisis in 1997/98, said Mulyani.

"Indonesia had had similar experience (of the banking crisis),"she said.

The Indonesian government initially injected 1 trillion rupiah (some 106 million U.S. dollars) to increase liquidity at Bank Century after then country's Deposit Insurance Corp. seized the bank on Nov. 21,2008, after the bank failed to comply with a 5 billion rupiah obligation.

The bank then received 6.7 trillion rupiah (some 708 million U.S. dollars) funds.
