JAKARTA, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono issued an order to publicly expose the alleged bank bailout scam worth 6.7 trillion rupiah (about 707.8 million U.S. dollars) which many alleged the money was used to finance President Susilo's efforts to secure his second presidency term, the Bisnis Indonesia reported here on Monday.
Speaking in front of media chief editors who were invited to the presidential palace on Sunday night, President Susilo wanted the public to know everything behind the government's bailout policy on Century Bank that sparked allegation the bailout money was misused in finance President Susilo campaign for July 8 presidential election.
"I want the bailout scheme to Bank Century be publicly exposed so as to make the people have the correct information about the bank's bailout, the cash flows and everything related to the bailout. If there was crime in it, it must be handled properly. I would say that it is shameful if a president obtained ill-gotten funds," the president said.
The petition to undertake inquiry into the alleged bailout scam in the Century Bank was already initiated by members of parliament from President Susilo's rival party Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) last week.
According to the finding of Indonesia's Supreme Auditing Agency (BPK), there were two irregular bailout fund disbursements worth 1.15 trillion rupiah (about 121.3 million U.S. dollars) and 630 billion rupiah (about 66.4 million dollars) for Century Bank that took place after the fund disbursement expiration period set at December 18, 2008.
