NEW DELHI, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- At least six people were killed and over 55 injured in two blasts launched by suspected United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) militants in the northeastern state of Assam Sunday, a senior police official said.

"The first blast occured when a bomb, planted in a bicycle, went off at a spot adjacent to Nalbari police station in lower Assam. A similar blast which occurred minutes after in front of a mobile phone shop, about 20 meters away from the police station, as people were trying to flee from the area at 9:30 a.m.," the official said.

The injured have been admitted to a local hospital where the condition of some 30 people are said to be serious. Vehicles parked in the busy and crowded area were damaged due to the impact of the blasts.

"Prima facie the blasts suggested that it was the handiwork of ULFA. A high alert has been sounded across the state in view of the blasts and people have been asked to remain indoors by the district administration," he said.

The ULFA is a separatist group seeking to establish a sovereign Assam via an armed struggle. In the past two decades, some 10,000 people have died in the clash between the ULFA rebels and the Indian security forces.
