BANGKOK, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- Thailand's Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Sunday affirmed his plan to visit north province of Chiang Mai next weekend while the ruling Democrat Party is planning to propose the government to impose security law in the province.

The prime minister said during his weekly TV broadcast that he will attend the annual Chiang Mai Chamber of Commerce meeting next Sunday to restore the confidence of investors.

He hoped that the event will bring about reconciliation because he believed people in Chiang Mai want to forget about the past political violence.

On Sunday, the Democrat Party said it will ask the cabinet to consider enforcing the Internal Security Act in Chiang Mai when the premier's visit to the province.

Party spokesman Buranat Samutharak said that the Democrat Partywas concerned that the anti-government red-shirted rallies could turn violent.

Earlier, a community radio station of the anti-government United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) made a joke that the red-shirts protesters may have a plan to assassinate Abhisit during his visit.

Buranat said there should be preventive measures against potential attacks on the prime minister, confrontations between demonstrators and security officers, certain media's move to urge people to gather in rallies and provoke violence, and activities aimed at creating fear and unrest.

However, the opposition Puea Thai has expressed opposition to the possible imposition of security law.
