PARIS, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- The IAAF, governing body of athletics, has altered the world championships program on Friday to set up a more compact schedule.
IAAF said it wants a concentrated evening sessions to have at least six gold medal finals taking place within three hours.
The main aim of reform is to have more compact sessions in the stadium and save one day for out-of-stadium competition, according to International Association of Athletics Federations spokesman Nick Davies.
The IAAF's ruling council agreed to help achieve this goal by reserving one day during the nine-day championships for road races outside the stadium.
It also said that the opening day, which inevitably includes qualification rounds, should feature prestige events like the men's 100 meters and women's 400.
Athletes in the men's and women's 100 and sprint hurdles will run their semifinals and final in the same evening sessions.
The IAAF wants a maximum of three rounds for all events, with qualification rounds restricted to mornings.
The changes take effect at the 2011 worlds in Daegu, South Korea.
The council decided to create a world challenge for hammer throwers whose event does not feature at the elite Diamond League meetings which debut next season.
Hammer throwers will compete in a series of six or seven competitions staged mainly at second-tier World Challenge event, which exists for race walkers and the decathlon and heptathlon events which are not accommodated by the top-tier meetings.
