LOS ANGELES, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- Supervisors from the University of California decided to raise the tuition by more than 2,500 dollars, or 32 percent by next fall to bridge a budget deficit amid wide and angry protests by students. Fourteen protesters were detained by university police and a crowd were dispersed in University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
According to a plan approved by Finance Committee of the Boardof Regents, the tuition hike will be applied in two steps over two years. For the beginning, the undergraduate cost will be raised by585 dollars from next spring, and in the second phase beginning in next fall, it will further go up by 1,344 dollars. As a result, combined with a 900 dollars registration fee, an undergraduate student will have to pay 10,302 dollars in addition to other fees like housing and books.
This plan will be deliberated at a Thursday full meeting of Board of Regents. If approved, this will be the first time when the cost in University of California amounts more than 10,000 dollars.
A group of students had gathered in UCLA where the supervisors was meeting, voicing their anger against the proposed pay rise and disrupted the meeting by staying at the meeting room. The school police arrested at least 14 protesters who refused to leave and dispersed the slogan-chanting crowd. The protests are basically peaceful.
