Argentina urges Israel to reach peace in Middle East

    BUENOS AIRES, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- Argentine President Cristina Fernandez met on Monday with her visiting Israeli counterpart Shimon Peres, urging him to reach peace in the Middle East to contribute to achieve a safer world.

    "For us the peace in the Middle East is a necessary peace, it becomes a fundamental issue to contribute to achieve a safer world," Fernandez said after the meeting.

    Fernandez said that Argentina will collaborate in what is possible at the peace process in the Middle East.

    "We are strongly convinced against the anti-Semitism and any racist and xenophobic manifestation," Fernandez added.

    Meanwhile, Peres said "the voice of Argentina is highly respected," adding that the support of Argentina to bring peace between Israel and the Palestinians "is of great value."

    Peres, who arrived in Argentina on Sunday coming from Brazil, also said that his visit began "a new tie in a new world."

    During the meeting, the two presidents signed a number of agreements, including a deal on telecommunication cooperation to develop postal and telecommunication services.

    Buenos Aires is the Latin American city with the largest number of Jewish people.
