MANILA, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Sunday urged the public to "learn" from the example set by WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao, who has succeeded in his boxing career despite his humble beginnings because of sheer determination, hard work.
"Once again, Filipino grit and determination triumphed over great odds. May this serve as inspiration to the entire Filipino nation especially on the youth that there is no limit to our capacity for success as long as we work, put our hearts and focus our mind to achieve our goals," the President said in a statement read by Press Secretary Cerge Remonde over radio.
She added: "Manny trained well and hard in most stringent self-discipline, persevered and above all has always placed himself in the hands of God. I hope we will all learn from his example so that together we can also move forward as a nation."
Mrs. Arroyo was unable to watch the Pacquiao-Cotto fight as she was at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) Leaders' Summit in Singapore, Remonde said.
