Bahrain's Mahboob wins men's 10,000m title at Asian championships

    GUANGZHOU, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- Hasan Mahboob of Bahrain clinched the gold medal of the men's 10,000 meters final at the 18th Asian athletics championships here on Saturday.

    Mahboob, who switched nationality from his birth country Kenya ahead of the 2006 season and claimed the title of the event in the2006 Doha Asian Games, won the race with a last-gasp dash, crossing the line first in 28 minutes and 23.70 seconds.

    "I felt very good today," said Mahboob, bronze medalist of the event in the 2007 Asian championships. "The cold weather made it a tougher event than it usually was."

    Nicholas Kemboi of Qatar took the silver in 28:25.22. He established an early lead with his compatriot Ahmadh Abdullah, but was overtaken by the winner at last.

    Abdullah stood third in 28:28.38. Chinese Dong Guojian and Cheng Tao took the fifth and seventh place respectively.
