LAGOS, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- Africa needs to have more concrete actions to meet the water and sanitation needs in the continent, African water ministers say.
They made the call at the end of a one-week African Ministers Council on Water (AMCOW) meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa, the News Agency of Nigeria reported on Saturday.
In its declaration issued on Friday, the forum called for strengthening and scaling up of existing initiatives as well as refinement of strategies to move the continent forward.
The ministers said a lot of commitments and initiatives had been made toward achieving the 2015 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and 2025 African Water Vision target for water and sanitation had been launched.
They stressed the need to develop strategies to accelerate progress on the continent, especially in fragile states. The ministers called for more funding by member-countries, and urged the AU to call a meeting of water and finance ministers to forge more cooperation to achieve better financing.
They adopted a document "Delivering on Africa's Water Security Commitments: A Framework for Reporting Actions to the AU," as a roadmap to the Sharm El-Sheikh Commitment on water and sanitation, made by the AU in July.
