Jack Lang, appointed by French President Nicolas Sarkozy on Oct. 1, will study such issues as the relations between France and the Korean Peninsula and the nuclear issue.
He was also expected to write a report based on his findings on the peninsula and propose ways to manage these issues for the French president and the foreign minister, so as to analyze the circumstances under which France would consider establishing diplomatic relations with the DPRK.
France has no formal diplomatic relations with the DPRK.
Lang said last Thursday in Beijing that he was looking forward to meeting with high-ranking officials of the DPRK during his stay in Pyongyang. He paid a week-long visit to South Korea last month to discuss the nuclear issue.
