STOCKHOLM, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- The European Union (EU) on Monday urged its member states to knock down all digital walls for the creation of a real internal market for Europe.
"The digital walls are still remaining among countries in the European Union. We must knock down these walls so that we can create a real internal market for Europe," EU Commissioner Viviane Redning said at a press conference in Visby, Gotland, Sweden's largest island, where an EU conference on eUnion 2015 is being held starting on Monday.
"We need high speed fiber to provide broadband services for all the people in Europe. We should not only have the infrastructure and the technology, but also have a unified legal agreement in Europe," said Redning through webcast.
"A single EU copyright in article 118 in the Lisbon Treaty allows us to buy across the border, this is great for the biggest market in the world, but we must be connected with each other," Redning added.
Aasa Torstensson, Minister for Communications of Sweden who opened the conference, especially stressed ICT services for young people in order to develop knowledge-based economy.
Several reports on the issues for a new ICT policy agenda are being released this autumn, most notably the Commission's "Digital Competitiveness report," and the report commissioned by the Swedish Presidency, "A Green Knowledge Society."
These reports highlight a large number of policy issues, areas and questions to be considered for a new ICT policy agenda for EU to 2015.
EU ministers in telecommunications and chief executives in large telecommunication companies such as Nokia are among the participants at the conference preparing for the telecommunication meeting in December.
