Turkey reports 27 A/H1N1 flu deaths

    ANKARA, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- Turkey registered four more influenza A/H1N1 deaths in the past 24 hours, bringing the national death toll from the novel flu to 27 since the first recorded on Oct. 24, the Health Ministry said Sunday.

    The ministry said in a statement that the latest victims of the A/H1N1 virus were three men and a two-year-old girl in Turkey, without giving any other details.

    Turkey has witnessed a fast rise of deaths from A/H1N1 flu in the past few days.

    On Saturday, the Turkish Health Ministry said two more Turks died of influenza A/H1N1 in Turkey, bringing the death toll to 23.

    Turkey registered the first A/H1N1 case on May 15. The first victim was a 28-year-old male hospital janitor in Ankara, who died of the A/H1N1 flu on Oct. 24.

    As of last Sunday, 1,870 people in Turkey had tested positive for A/H1N1 flu since May, according to the statement.

    On Monday, Turkey began to vaccinate vulnerable groups against the flu, starting from health workers and Muslim pilgrims preparing to travel to Mecca for the annual hajj.
