Islamic states to hold economy summit in Istanbul

    ISTANBUL, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- The Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) will hold the 25th Meeting of Standing Committee for Economic and Commercial Cooperation in Istanbul between Nov. 5and 9.

    An "OIC economy summit" will be held on November 9 with the participation of several heads of state at Istanbul's Four Seasons Hotel which will be chaired by Turkish President Abdullah Gul, according to the semi-official Anatolia News Agency.

    Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will take part in the OIC economic summit, Iranian officials said on Sunday.

    Informed sources said that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is also expected to participate in the summit.

    The summit will host the heads of state of the OIC Executive Committee member countries (Egypt, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Syria, Tajikistan, Turkey, Uganda) as well as heads of state of some other OIC member countries.

    The committee is formed of 57 OIC members and five observer states.

    The summit works to promote economic and commercial relations among its member states.

    The OIC website reported that the summit would review latest economic developments and issues related to investment and trade between the organization's member states.

    Other topics dealing with poverty, technical and economic support, financial cooperation, investment and cooperation between central banks would be also discussed.

    Organization of the Islamic Conference is the most influential international organization of Islamic countries, established in 1969.
