Pakistan leaders congratulate Afghan president on re-election

    ISLAMABAD, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani president and prime minister have congratulated Afghan President Hamid Karzai on his re-election, the Foreign Ministry of Pakistan said Monday.

    The Afghan Election Commission on Monday declared Hamid Karzai as the winner of Afghanistan's presidential election after his rival Abdullah Abdullah quit the run-off.

    "I have great pleasure to extend to you my heartiest felicitations on your re-election as the President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan," Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari said in his message of felicitation.

    He also congratulated the people of Afghanistan as well as the Independent Election Commission for successfully concluding the presidential electoral process in difficult circumstances.

    "This is indeed a moment of far reaching significance," he said.

    He said the government and people of Pakistan are deeply committed to further cementing Pakistan's close, fraternal and cooperative ties with Afghanistan during Karzai's second term of office.

    Pakistan's Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani welcomed the declaration of election results by the Independent Election Commission.

    He assured Pakistan's unwavering support and solidarity of the government and people of Pakistan in deepening Pakistan's relations with Afghanistan.
