KUALA LUMPUR, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia is satisfied with Iran's explanation on its use of nuclear energy for power generation, a Malaysian official said here on Monday.
Malaysian Foreign Affairs Minister Anifah Aman made this remark at the joint press conference held after the 12th Session of the Eight Developing Islamic Countries (D8) Council of Ministers ended here.
He said that the D8 gathering did not discuss the nuclear crisis in Iran as the main focus of the session was to promote collaboration among the member countries for the benefits of their people.
However, Anifah added that the nuclear crisis was thoroughly discussed in the United Nations (UN).
Anifah stressed that while the D8 Session's agenda was to seek economic development, it was appropriate for the UN to take care of Iran's nuclear crisis.
He explained that this was because the nuclear issue was a global matter rather than one affecting only the D8 member countries.
Stressing that Malaysia signed the Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT), Anifah said that Malaysia wanted the uranium to be used in a peaceful manner.
When asked if the security issue would affect the cooperation among the D8 member countries, Anifah said the grouping was confident in safeguarding their collective interests.
Anifah also said that he did not see any problems in the implementation of projects drawn up by the grouping.
Instead, the D8 countries would be able to foster better economic and social ties.
