SRINAGAR, India-controlled Kashmir, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- An Indian policeman was killed and another wounded critically Sunday after suspected militants fired on them from a point-blank range in India-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The shootout took place in Qamarwari area of Srinagar city, the summer capital of India-controlled Kashmir.

"Suspected militants shot two policemen in Qamarwari market this afternoon from a point-blank range. The duo was soon rushed to hospital but one of the policemen succumbed to his injuries on way, while as another one is critically hurt and undergoing treatment," said police spokesman posted in Srinagar.

The attack created panic among the shopkeepers and pedestrians.

Soon after the shootout, the entire areas were cordoned to nab the assailants.

So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Militants occasionally target police and paramilitary troopers in the region, that otherwise witness gunfight intermittently.
