WASHINGTON, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- The United States is looking forward to having cooperation with Lebanon's news government, which is expected to be formed in coming days, a senior official of the State Department said here on Wednesday.
"Expectations are currently high that a cabinet could be announced within the coming days. We certainly hope this is the case," acting U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern affairs Jeffrey Feltman said in a hearing of the House of Representatives' Foreign Affairs Committee's subcommittee on the Middle East and South Asia.
"The Lebanese people have waited too long for their government to return to the work of ensuring security, economic development, and political dialogue for all Lebanese citizens," said Feltman.
"We look forward to working with the next Lebanese government and reiterate that our support for Lebanese sovereignty will not be compromised by our engagement with any other party."
Lebanon held parliamentary elections on June 7, with the coalition led by pro-Western Saad Hariri having beat the Hezbollah-led camp. However, the formation of a unity government in the country has been pressed by Hezbollah, which refuses to allow the U.S. and Saudi-backed majority to make major national decisions.
