Protesting students condemn alleged desecration of Quran in N Afghanistan

    KABUL, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- More than 1,000 students took to the streets Tuesday in northern Balkh provincial capital of Mazar city and condemned the alleged desecration of Muslim holy book Quran by the U.S. soldiers.

    The protestors called on the government to punish those responsible for desecrating Quran.

    Some U.S. soldiers, according to locals, during an operation against Taliban militants in Wardak province 40 km west of Kabul, raided a mosque and burned Quran.

    An identical peaceful demonstration was held by students in Baghlan province in the same on Tuesday and denounced the alleged desecration.

    The cities of Afghan capital Kabul, Jalalabad and Khost have witnessed similar demonstrations over the past week.

    A violent demonstration was held in Kabul Monday which left over a dozen police and protestors injured.
