JAKARTA, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian government will start rehabilitation and reconstruction in earthquake-hit West Sumatra province from Nov. 1, Kompas.com online news quoted a minister as saying on Tuesday.

    According to Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Agung Laksono, the government has prepared 8.6 trillion rupiah (about 860 million U.S. dollars) for the purpose.

    "The fund is taken from the state budget, local government budget, and people's donation, both nationally and internationally," said Agung after a coordination meeting with other ministers here.

    Agung said that it is expected that the first phase of emergency response will conclude in eight regencies/towns in the province hit by the earthquake by the end of October. So starting from Nov. 1, the second phase of rehabilitation and reconstruction could commence.

    "The first phase is accelerated. The previous plan is by the end of November," said Agung.

    He said that his office is calculating the losses, including infrastructure, public facilities, hospitals, and schools damaged by the quake.

    However, two regencies were still in emergency response phase, namely Agam and Pariaman regencies due to heavy damage they suffered.

    A 7.9 magnitude earthquake hit the province on September 30, claiming more than 1,000 lives.
