COTABATO, Philippines, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- A magnitude-5.6 quake struck in the southern Philippines on Tuesday morning, the United States Geological Survey reported.

    The quake was recorded at 8:05 a.m. with the epicenter at 40 miles (65 km) northwest of southern Philippine city of General Santos.

    It was also felt in the cities of Davao, Cotabato and in Manila but no casualty or damage was reported. There was no tsunami alert either.

    The Philippines sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where continental plates collide causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.

    The worst earthquake in the country happened on Aug. 16, 1976 after a tsunami caused by a quake killed between 5,000 and 8,000 people in the Moro Gulf region in southern Philippines.
