AMMAN, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- Dozens of Jordanians took part in a sit-in Monday, calling for abolishing the peace treaty with Israel and shutting down the Israeli embassy in the Jordanian capital of Amman.

    Participants, who included members of the Kingdom's professional associations and the Islamic Action Front, the political wing of the Muslim Brotherhood, called for severing all ties with Israel and slammed the Wadi Araba peace treaty Jordan and Israel signed in 1994.

    Abdullah Obeidat, chairman of the council of Jordan's professional associations, which called for the sit-in on the occasion of the 15th anniversary for signing the peace treaty, slammed the treaty and said the associations will continue placing pressure on the authorities to abolish it.

    Jordan's 14 professional associations have been spearheading efforts since 1994 to scrap the peace treaty and cut all types of normalization with Israel.

    Obeidat said Jordan is "threatened by Israel in spite of the peace treaty", referring to remarks by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and several Israeli officials who said "Jordan is the alternative homeland for the Palestinians."

    Protestors also burnt the Israeli flag at the sit-in.

    "Fifteen years have passed since the treaty was signed and it did not bring any good. The treaty was signed against the willingness of the public," Islamist MP Hamzah Mansour, who is also the head of Jordan's Higher Executive Committee for Defending the Homeland and Confronting Normalization, said at the sit-in.

    Participants said although 15 years have passed since the treaty was signed but still there are Jordanian prisoners in Israeli jails, calling on the government to exert "serious" efforts to ensure the release of the 27 Jordanian prisoners in Israeli jails.

    They also called for canceling the General Assembly Law, which stipulates receiving prior approval for any gathering by the local governor of each area, a matter that deemed by the IAF and those activists as restrictive to the public freedom.
