RAMALLAH, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- The Palestinian leadership on Sunday urged the Israeli government to stop "provocative" acts against the Palestinians in the Old City of Jerusalem.
"Jerusalem is a red line that can not be overstepped and we warn of dangerous consequences that only cause tension in the region," Nabil Abu Rdineh, spokesman for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, said in a statement.
His remarks were made as Israeli police and Palestinian protestors clashed in the holy compound that contains the Al-Aqsa Mosque, Islam's third holiest shrine.
The clashes erupted when Jewish worshipers, who call the place the Temple Mount, tried to enter the shrine along with the police.
At least 10 Palestinians have been wounded in the standoff and 15 were arrested. The police surrounded the Al-Aqsa Mosque in a bid to arrest other demonstrators who holed themselves up in the mosque.
Among the detainees was Hatem Abd al-Qader, the Palestinian minister of Jerusalem affairs. Prior to his arrest, he told Xinhua over the phone that "the situation is very dangerous inside Al-Aqsa Mosque."
He added that the Israeli "settlers have failed to storm the mosque due to the Palestinian people's steadfastness."
