MADRID, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- This year's Tour de France winner Alberto Contador said on Saturday that he would not rule out moving to a Spanish cycling team to ride next season.
Contador, who won the three week cycle race in July for the second time, currently rides with the Kazak based Astana team and has a deal with them until the end of 2010. However, the International Cycling Union (UCI) has still to grant Astana a license to race next year.
That means Contador is free to rescind his contract with Astana and negotiate with other teams.
Speaking just over a week ago, Contador admitted he had expected to know his future by the middle of last week, now he seems to be less clear what decision he will make.
"My lawyers are studying the possibility of breaking my deal with Astana and it helps to know what the UCI has said on the issue," he told sports paper Diario AS.
The Spaniard refused to shut the door entirely on his current team.
"I want to know what Astana's project is for 2010. The first thing I want to know is what is going to happen with my team. Although it is still without a UCI license, I think the new people brought into the team are serious workers."
"We still have good riders at Astana and with a few minor touches there is a team that can race the Tour with guarantees," said Contador.
Should Contador decide to leave Astana, there are several other teams that want to have him in their ranks: Caisse d' Epargne, Liquigas, Quick Step and Garmin-Slipstream have all expressed an interest.
"There is something with all of those teams. Any of them would be a good option for next year," said Contador, who nevertheless would prefer to ride with a Spanish based side.
"I would be excited to ride with a Spanish team and Caisse d' Epargue is in an unbeatable position. We'll see what happens because we have to study everything carefully," he said.
