"President Abbas calls on the Palestinians in Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza Strip to hold free and direct general presidential and legislative elections on Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010," the Palestinian official state-run news agency Wafa quoted a decree issued by Abbas on Friday.
According to Wafa, the decree is as follows:
Article 1: The Palestinian people in Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza Strip are called for direct and free general presidential and legislative elections on Sunday, January 24, 2010.
Article 2: The chief and members of the Central Elections Committee and all other specialized corporations are asked to implement the rules of this decree and start working with it from the date it was issued and to be published in the official daily and other Palestinian newspapers.
The Palestinian Central Council of Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) would convene on Saturday to decide on a date for holding the elections, which is constitutionally due on Jan. 25 next year.

Meanwhile, Gaza ruling Islamic Hamas movement rejected on Friday holding the general elections in the Palestinian territories before the Palestinian factions reach a reconciliation agreement.
Ahmed Bahar, a senior Gaza-based Hamas leader told dozens of the group's supporters in Gaza City that "any elections held in the Palestinian territories without any national accordance won't be accepted."
"Holding elections before reaching a national agreement would deepen split among the two parts of the Palestinian territories, Gaza Strip and the West Bank," said Bahar, who is also a deputy speaker of the parliament.
He went on saying that Hamas is seeking "free and fair elections," adding "we have to prepare the healthy atmosphere away from the requirements of the international Quartet which wants us to recognize Israel."
Hamas rejects Abbas' decree over holding Palestinian elections on Jan. 24
GAZA, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Gaza Strip ruling Islamic Hamas movement rejected on Friday the decree of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who called on the Palestinians to go for general elections on Jan. 24, 2010.
In a written statement sent to reporters, Hamas movement considered Abbas' decree "a destructive strike" to all the efforts to achieve an inter-Palestinian reconciliation, adding "the decree is a rejected step." Full story
Abbas to issue elections decree, leaving door open for reconciliation
CAIRO, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said Tuesday that he will issue a decree on Sunday to hold elections before Jan. 24, leaving the door open for reconciliation which will put more pressure on Hamas to sign the Egyptian-brokered reconciliation deal.
"On the basis of the constitution, we are compelled to issue a decree on Oct. 25 to hold presidential and parliamentary elections before Jan. 24, and we will issue it," Abbas told a press conference after meeting with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. Full story
Abbas slams Hamas of evading reconciliation pact
RAMALLAH, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas slammed on Tuesday Gaza ruling Hamas movement, saying the Islamic movement made use of the UN fact-finding report on the Israeli war on Gaza last winter to evade signing a reconciliation pact in Cairo.
"All the time, Hamas searches for any reason or any excuse to evade from dialogue and from advancing the national unity that ends their black coup on Gaza. Fatah urges Abbas not to delay Palestinian elections
RAMALLAH, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- The highest leading body of Fatah Sunday called on the movement's leader Mahmoud Abbas not to postpone general elections.
In a statement sent to the media, Fatah Central Committee said it calls on Abbas "to decree holding the elections on their due time according to the basic law." Full story
