RAMALLAH, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama discussed on Telephone on Friday with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas about resuming the stalled peace process in the Middle East, a Palestinian official report said.

The Palestinian state-run news agency (Wafa) reported that President Obama telephoned President Abbas on Friday afternoon and both had previewed all the issues related to the peace process and the challenges it is facing.

The Palestinian official news agency quoted Nabil Abu Rdeineh, spokesman of the Palestinian Presidency as saying that President Obama reiterated to President Abbas his personal commitment to establish a Palestinian statehood.

He added that President Abbas explained to President Obama his commitments to a clear reference to the peace process that leads to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state and halt settlements.

"The telephone conversation was so important for the future of the peace process and the entire region of the Middle East," Abu Rdeineh was quoted by "Wafa" as saying.

Earlier on Thursday, media reports said that U.S. peace envoy George Mitchell has plans to visit in the Middle East next week to hold talks with both Israel and the Palestinians to push forward the stalled peace process.

Abbas and the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) insist that no peace talks with Israel can take place, unless the Israeli government halts settlement's activities and recognize the principle of the two-state solution vision.
