ISLAMABAD, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- In last 24 hours, 13 militants were killed while six others were arrested during Pakistani security forces operation in South Waziristan, according to a military statement Friday.
It said that two soldiers died and seven others were injured in the operation against Taliban militants in the country's tribal area bordering Afghanistan.
The army said that six Uzbeks were killed and books in the Uzbek language were discovered during the operation.
On relief activities, the army said, 8,296 Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) families have been registered since Oct. 13, this year and 5,573 cash cards have been distributed amongst the IDP families of DI Khan and Tank, major town in South Waziristan.
The security forces launched the operation at 3 a.m. local time on Saturday (2100 GMT Friday) in the South Waziristan tribal agency bordering Afghanistan.
The army said that about 30,000 soldiers are in place to take on an estimated 10,000 hard-core Taliban militants in the lawless area.
About 500 commandos arrived in the region on Friday.
The military said that the operation was launched in six towns of the area and is likely to continue for six to eight weeks, but no final deadline can be given.¡¡
