7 foreigners among 73 suspects arrested across Pakistan

     ISLAMABAD, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- As many as 73 suspects including seven foreigners have been arrested in different parts of Pakistan, according to local press reports Sunday.

    The private NNI news agency quoted sources as saying that law enforcement agencies conducted raids in cities including the Pakistani capital of Islamabad and the eastern city of Lahore, where a United Nations office and police stations were recently attacked by suicide bombers.

    The security agencies with the help of mobile phones records arrested 35 militants from different cities.

    In Islamabad, police raided the office of defunct Hizb-ul-Tahrir and booked 35 persons and claimed to have recovered some sensitive materials from the office.

    In Lahore, secret agencies raided near Azadi Chaok Yadgar and arrested three persons and recovered a huge cache of weapons, cartridge and fake national identity cards from their possession.

    The accused are said to belong to the Tehrik-e-Taliban Amjad Farooqi Group and further investigation is underway in this regard.

    Police during checking stopped a coach going from Quetta, the provincial capital of Balochistan, to Peshawar, the provincial capital of North West Frontier Province (NWFP) and arrested sever foreigners.

    On the other hand, Aqeel alias Dr. Osman, a Taliban militant who was arrested during a hostage recovery operation on Oct. 11, has revealed some important information during interrogation, according to the NNI report.

    Osman, mastermind of the Oct. 10 attack on the general headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi, some 30 kms south of Islamabad, is believed to the brains behind the attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team last March in Lahore. He was also involved in planning attacks on former president Pervez Musharraf and former prime minister Shaukat Aziz.
