MOSCOW, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- Russia and India would jointly manufacture a fifth-generation fighter aircraft by year end, the Russian Defense Ministry said Thursday.

Russia and India agreed to "solve all problems concerning the joint development of the fifth-generation fighter by the end of the year and embark on manufacture," the defense ministry said after the ninth meeting of the Russian-Indian intergovernmental commission on military cooperation, which ended here Thursday.

The two countries will also cooperate in developing helicopters and infantry fighting vehicles, the ministry said.

Russia's fifth-generation fighter, whose fighting capability is greatly improved compared to the previous generation, will serve as the major fighter of the Russian Air Forces in this century.

According to the ministry, the two sides also agreed that they would soon come up with a scheme to end the dispute over the Admiral Gorshkov aircraft carrier.

Under a contract signed five years ago, Russia should have delivered the aircraft carrier to India in 2008. However, Moscow claimed that it had underestimated the cost of the refurbishment and demanded extra payment, which New Delhi said was "exorbitant."

India, a major purchaser of Russian arms, has some 80 percent of its weapons supplied by Russia.
