JINAN, Shandong Province, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- The teenage trampoline athlete was about to be released from the hospital after suffering an injury scare at the National Games here.
Wu Chuwen, 15, was rushed to hospital after the athlete from Guangdong provincial team fell on the neck in her routine in the women's trampoline team final on Tuesday. Fujian team, spearheaded by Olympic champion He Wenna, clinched the title.
"The magnetic resonance examination revealed that Wu did not incur any serious injury in her spinal cord," Wang Yuping, deputy chief of Guangdong said Tuesday night.
Doctors said Wu should remain in hospital for observation before she is released, possibly on Wednesday.
Wu's narrow escape from severe injury made people sigh with relief as she would not repeat the tragedy of 11 years ago when former gymnast Sang Lan was paralyzed in an incident.
Sang crashed head first to the mat during warm-up session before the vault competition at the 1998 Friendly Games in New York, which left her with a serious paraplegia for life.
