LIMA, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- Peru is seeking to create a regional anti-drug trafficking council, jointly with other members of the South American Union of Nations (Unasur), Interior Minister Octavio Salazar said on Sunday.

Interior ministers from Unasur countries agreed to create a South American council to combat drug trafficking during a meeting held in Montevideo, Uruguay, on Oct. 3. Senior officials from Peru's National Anti-Drugs Directorate and National Police participated in the discussion.

"We are going to implement all that was discussed there," said Salazar, who did not attend the meeting.

He said drug traffickers were not only active in nations that produce coca leaf, from which cocaine is extracted, but also used every nation in the South American region as a springboard to transport the drug to markets in the United States, Europe, Asia and Oceania.

Peru, Colombia and Bolivia produce almost all of the world's coca leaf.

Salazar also said the anti-drug work should be carried out steadily. He called for more regional cooperation and better armed anti-drug police forces.

Unasur, formerly known as the South American Community of Nations, consists of 12 member countries, which are Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Venezuela, Chile, Guyana and Suriname.
