ISLAMABAD, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- The political and military leadership of Pakistan has finally decided to carry out military operation in restive South Waziristan tribal areas after a meeting in presidency here Saturday, local TV channels reported.
The meeting finalized the strategy for South Waziristan operation, according to the private TV ARY NEWS. Another channel AAJ NEWS also reported that the date for Waziristan operation had been finalized.
The meeting chaired by Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari was attended by Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani, Chief of Army Staff Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Director General of Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) Ahmed Shuja Pasha.
The meeting also discussed the prevailing security situation, with a particular reference to the attack on the army headquarters Saturday and the recent attacks at Peshawar, the capital of North West Frontier Province (NWFP) and the federal capital Islamabad.
Pakistani Federal Minister for Interior Rehman Malik Friday said that the government was going to take a decision on the military operation in South Waziristan Tribal Agency within next couple of days, as terrorists involved in the current wave of suicide blasts had links with the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan leaders of the Agency.
Washington says Al-Qaeda and Taliban militants who fled Afghanistan after the 2001 U.S.-led invasion are holed up in the semi-autonomous tribal belt along Pakistan's border with Afghanistan.
