ISLAMABAD, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- The deadline set for the militants to lay down arms and surrender to Pakistan's security forces is going to end on Thursday in Mamond tehsil of Bajaur tribal agency in northwest Pakistan, local TV channels reported Wednesday.

According to sources, three-day-long deadline was given to militants in Bajaur agency's Mamond tehsil to give up arms and surrender before administration, which will end on Thursday.

A major Jirga (tribal council) of Mamond tribes in connection with laying down arms will be held in Khar area on Friday wherein the situation will be reviewed, sources said.

According to witnesses, the migration of a large number of people from Mamond tehsil is underway. Meanwhile, the security forces have shelled many suspected hideouts of militants during search operation on tehsil Novagai on Wednesday.

Nearly 2,000 militants have been killed since Pakistani security forces launched the military operation against Taliban militants late April after militants in early April entered the Buner district from the neighboring Swat district and refused to vacate the area despite their pledge to do so.
