TEGUCIGALPA, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) - U.S. Republican Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen demanded on Monday here restoring aid to Honduras.
Ros-Lehtinen, member of the U.S. Congress delegation which arrived on Monday to the country, added that by cutting the aid to Honduras, U.S. puts on risk its national security because the threat of the drug trafficking could be bigger.
The U.S. lawmakers will meet with different Honduran sectors and discuss the political crisis of the Central American country.
During a press conference, Ros-Lehtinen said the Honduran elections to be held in November are an opportunity to respect the democratic process in the country.
"What the people, the Congress and the Supreme Court of this country want is to hold free, independent and without-fraud elections," Ros-Lehtinen added.
"This is the legitimate (the de facto) government, I will tell my colleagues (U.S. Congressmen) to come to Honduras, not to see the newspapers, CNN or any media, to come here to meet with the legitimate government to listen their aspiration of living in peace and democracy," she said.
De facto Honduran president Roberto Micheletti invites U.S. Congressmen to visit the country and check everything is in peace and tranquillity.
"The Unites States are our friends, we opened the spaces to come to meet this noble people of Honduras," Micheletti said.
