MEXICO CITY, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- Tropical depression Olaf brought heavy rain to northwestern Mexico, the National Meteorological Service (SMN) said on Sunday.
The SMN urged citizens to take precautions at sea as Olaf, though it is now weakening to a low pressure system, is causing heavy rain, strong wind and large waves off shore. It is also causing landslides in mountainous areas and flooding on the coast.
Heavy rain and flooding has been reported in the northwestern state of Baja California Sur since Friday, with state capital La Paz and nearby city of Comondu worst hit.
The Civil Protection Directorate there has activated municipal protection procedures in the cities of La Pas, Los Cabos, Comondu, Loresto and Mulege.
The storm has sustained winds of 35 km per hour (kph) and gusts of up to 45 kph. It is now 40 km northwest of La Paz and heading eastwards toward continental Mexico.
