MADRID, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Alberto Ruiz Gallardon, the Mayor of Madrid refused to be drawn Saturday as to whether or not the city would launch a bid to host the 2020 Olympic Games.
Gallardon returned to Madrid with the rest of the city's delegation after Madrid failed in its bid to be chosen to host the2016 Games at the International Olympic Committee session held in Copenhagen.
Although Madrid got through to the final vote after the previous elimination of Chicago and Tokyo, the city was beaten in the final election by Rio De Janeiro.
It is the second consecutive time that Madrid has failed in a bid to host the Games. The city presented a candidacy to host the 2012 Games four years ago, but lost out to London.
Now Gallardon is reluctant to discuss whether on not the city will try for a third time.
"We won't decide on a candidacy for 2020 either this year or next year. It is something we will have to debate in 2012," he said on arrival at Madrid's Barajas airport.
However, although Gallardon was uncertain about a third Olympic bid, he admitted that the Spanish would be aiming to be chosen as the venue for the World Cup in 2018 or 2022.
"There is a will in Spain to organize the World Cup. I have to say that the Football Federation supported our bid to host the Game and now we will support the Federation in its bid to organize the next World Cup. After that we will start to think what the future objects are for the city of Madrid," said Gallardon.
