AMMAN, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Dozens of Jordanians on Saturday took part in a sit-in called for by the Islamic Action Front (IAF) in protest of violating the sanctity of Al Aqsa Mosque as a group of Israeli troops and Jewish radicals broke into the shrine recently.

    Holding pictures of the mosque and banners with words of support to the Palestinians, participants chanted slogans against Israel, calling for the closure of the Israeli embassy in Amman and stopping normalization with Israel. Jordan and Israel signed a peace treaty in 1994.

    IAF members and participants at the sit-in criticized the silence of the Arabs over the Israeli violations against the mosque and the holy sites in Jerusalem. According to the UN, East Jerusalem is considered an occupied territory.

    "The Zionist attack on Al Aqsa Mosque and the holy sites in Jerusalem is not something new. There have been several attempts to destroy the mosque and all should shoulder the responsibility to defend Jerusalem and the holy sites," Hamzah Mansour, head of the parliamentary bloc of the IAF, which is the political arm of Jordan's Muslim Brotherhood, said at the sit-in.

    Last Sunday, clashes erupted between several Palestinians and Israeli police members as a group of Jewish radicals broke into the yard of Al Aqsa Mosque. In Amman, the government summoned the Israeli charge d'affaires and handed over a strongly-worded message of protest over breaking into the mosque.

    At Saturday's sit-in, the participants called for extending all types of support to the Palestinians, especially those in Jerusalem to help them in the face of the Israeli violations.

    Mansour described negotiations with the Israelis as a "trap", calling on the Arab regimes to exert efforts to end the siege imposed on the Palestinians in Gaza Strip.
