    PADANG, Indonesia, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Vice President Jusuf Kalla said here on Saturday that the government would hand out cash to those people whose houses were destroyed in Wednesday's devastating earthquake.

    "As of November, the government will begin distributing the cash," Kalla said." This is aimed at helping the people buy the materials needed to restore their homes."

    The vice president promised sufficient supplies of construction materials would be available to restore the whole city.

    "The amount of cash to be handed out will depend on the extent of the damage," he said, adding that owners of the houses that are badly damaged may get up to 15 million rupiah (about 1,556 U.S. dollars).

    As of Saturday afternoon, the West Sumatra disaster management coordination unit reported that 21,738 houses have been badly damaged and 6,721 others moderately damaged.

    In addition, at least 55 office buildings and 52 mosques are also damaged.

    Kalla said the final tally of victims and damage would be released in two weeks.

UN dispatches relief effort to Indonesia's quake-stricken West Sumatra

Indonesia's quake hit-Sumatra needs $300-400 mln for rehabilitation 

    JAKARTA, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia's Vice President Jusuf Kalla said that rehabilitation for damaged infrastructures and buildings in the earthquake-hit areas in Sumatra Island will need 3-4 trillion rupiah (about 300-400 million U.S. dollars), the private news portal Kompas.com reported on Friday.
