    PADANG, Indonesia, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Death toll from the 7.6-magnitude quake that hit in West Sumatra province of Indonesia Wednesday has reached 535 people and 303 others went missing, the provincial Disaster Management Agency said here Saturday.

    The quake has seriously injured 223 people, the agency said.

    It has also destroyed 21,732 houses and caused damage to 16, 293 others, the agency added.

    The death toll would probably rise to more than 1,000 as many have been trapped under the debris.

    Indonesia, home to over 230 million people, is laid on a vulnerable quake-hit zone called the "Pacific Ring of Fire," where two continental plates, stretching from Western hemisphere to Japan, meet. The geological feature has caused frequent seismic and volcanic movements.

UN dispatches relief effort to Indonesia's quake-stricken West Sumatra

Indonesia's quake hit-Sumatra needs $300-400 mln for rehabilitation 

    JAKARTA, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia's Vice President Jusuf Kalla said that rehabilitation for damaged infrastructures and buildings in the earthquake-hit areas in Sumatra Island will need 3-4 trillion rupiah (about 300-400 million U.S. dollars), the private news portal Kompas.com reported on Friday.
