PYONGYANG, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- An official newspaper of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Saturday called for inter-Korean reconciliation and unification, as well as enhanced contacts, exchange and cooperation.

    The Rodong Sinmun daily carried an editorial to mark the second anniversary of an inter-Korean declaration issued in 2007.

    The declaration, a very important document in the history of the nation, was a guideline for the cause of national reunification and should be fully fulfilled, it said.

    The declaration, signed by DPRK's top leader Kim Jong Il and then South Korean president Roh Moo-hyun on Oct. 4, 2007, pledged to ease tension on the Korea Peninsula and build closer economic ties.

    The interests of the Korean nation should be put in the first place despite the differences on ideologies, social systems and political views, the editorial said.

    It also called for enhancing economic cooperation between the two sides under the principles of helping meet each other's needs and common prosperity.
